Saint Laurent (YSL) Sac de Jour – 2023 review, including sizes, price, what fits inside and more
YSL’s Sac de Jour is one of those bags that became a classic as soon as it was introduced nearly a decade ago. But is this bag still a good pick in 2023?
Check out our guide for more details about Sac de Jour sizes, materials, prices, and more.
YSL Brand History
YSL, also known as Yves Saint Laurent or Saint Laurent, is a French luxury fashion house. It was founded in 1962 by Yves Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé.
In a short amount of time, the brand gained a reputation for its gender-fluid creations, most notably its tailored women’s tuxedo jacket, Le Smoking.
Within a few years, YSL branched out into ready-to-wear, leather goods, and cosmetics.
YSL Sac de Jour History

Translated from French as Bag of the Day, the Sac de Jour was released in 2013 when designer Hedi Slimane took over Saint Laurent.
In designing the Sac de Jour, Slimane sought to create a modern version of the Hermes Birkin bag. While some appreciated the bag’s sleek lines and classic styling, others merely saw it as a cheap knockoff.
In spite of the detractors, the Sac de Jour is likely the most popular piece to come out of Slimane’s four-year tenure as YSL’s Creative Director. In fact, the Sac de Jour is still part of YSL’s core collection years after Slimane’s departure.
Saint Laurent Sac de Jour Description

There are two main styles of The Sac de Jour, the original rigid version, and a slouchier version called the Supple that debuted in 2017.
Aside from the construction, the two versions have a lot of features in common: two top handles, a removable shoulder strap, a removable leather padlock stored in a leather case, a snap button compression closure, accordion side pleats, and metal feet.
The interior of the bag is completely open in the Nano and Baby sizes, while the small and medium have zippered side and middle compartments.
YSL Sac de Jour Sizes
The original version of the YSL Sac de Jour comes in three sizes: nano, baby, and small. The supple version comes in a fourth size, medium, as well.

Where Can You Buy The Sac de Jour? Does It Hold Its Value?
It’s quite easy to buy a Sac de Jour. You can buy a new SDJ directly from YSL’s website, from their physical boutiques or from the many online stockists such as Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Mytheresa and more.
If you want to grab a bargain, we recommend you also look at the pre-loved market. Most Sac de Jour bags don’t hold their value very well, so you can easily buy one for under $1,500 USD.
Pros and Cons of the YSL Sac de Jour
Pros:
- Classic, chic style
- Transitions well from day to night (especially smaller sizes)
- Sturdy and holds its shape well
- The SDJ bags, even in smaller sizes, can fit a lot
- Can be carried by hand, on the crook of the elbow, or cross-body
- The bigger bags make a great, classic and non-flashy work tote
Cons:
- Heavy, even when empty
- Light colors are prone to color transfer
- Lock pouch may move around and scratch the bag
- Doesn’t lay flat when carried crossbody, making it cumbersome

Is the YSL Sac de Jour Worth Buying? Is It Dated Or Classic?
Given what you know about the Sac de Jour, there’s only one more question to answer–is this bag worth purchasing?
As with any luxury bag purchase, we recommend doing a closet inventory and assessing what you want out of a bag before making a purchase.
With that in mind, we’re definitely fans of the Sac de Jour. Specifically, we appreciate its timeless styling, sturdy construction, versatile carrying options, and impressive storage capacity.
We definitely do not consider the Sac de Jour dated! Yes, it might not be an "it" bag in 2023, it's not a trendy style - but it's a simple, structured, classic handbag that is worth adding to your collection.
That said, this bag might not be for everyone. Its construction makes it heavy and cumbersome, therefore it’s probably not a good fit for those with neck or shoulder problems.
