Goyard is perhaps best known for its lightweight, durable tote bags but we think their beautiful, well-constructed backpacks deserve a second look.

In this article, we’ll share details about all five of Goyard’s backpacks, including design features, sizes, and prices. It’ll be tough to choose just one, but we hope this article will make the decision easier for you.

Goyard Brand History

Founded in 1853 by François Goyard, a skilled trunk maker, Goyard is a French luxury brand specializing in leather goods. In fact, Goyard is the world’s oldest leather goods manufacturer currently operating.

From the beginning, Goyard has been a relatively quiet brand. They don’t have blowout sales or participate in flashy collaborations. They don’t give interviews. And they certainly don’t sell anything online.

That said, the brand gained a bit more traction in 1998 when Jean-Michel Signoles bought the family-owned business. Under his leadership, Goyard opened a number of new workshops in France, expanded its boutiques across four continents, and introduced new colorways.

Still, despite all of these changes, Goyard maintains its reputation as one of the world’s foremost luxury brands for celebrities, heads of state, and the well-heeled.

Which Is The Best Goyard Backpack?

If you’re looking for an everyday, small backpack – the Mini Alpin might be the one. If you’re on the hunt for a regular sized Goyard backpack, there are several factors that you can use to make your decision easier.

  • weight – carrying a backpack typically means that you’re going to carry a lot of things with you, so you might not want one that is already heavy. The lightest Goyard backpack is the Saint Leger
  • closure – as you can see in the photo below, different Goyard backpacks have different types of closures. Personally, I love a zipped closure, which is why I gravitate towards the Cisalpin
  • size – depending on what you need to carry with you, you might need a smaller or a bigger backpack. The biggest backpack currently available is the Steamer and the smallest is of course the Mini Alpin
  • strap width – it’s up to you if you prefer a sleeker, thinner strap or a more comfortable wider strap, there’s a Goyard backpack for every taste
  • price – it’s of course a big basis for which Goyard backpack to choose. Currently, the most affordable backpack is the Saint Leger

Where Can I Buy A Goyard Backpack?

The easiest way to buy a Goyard backpack is pre-loved from either a trusted consignment website such Fashionphile, Rebag, 1st Dibs or Farfetch. Alternatively, you can find quite a few second-hand Goyard backpacks on eBay, but please make sure you’re buying from a reputable seller and to authenticate once you get your backpack.

Cisalpin Backpack

goyard cisalpin review
Goyard Cisalpin Review

Materials:

Cisalpin’s body is made out of Goyardine canvas. The straps, top handle, and base are made out of Chevroches calfskin.

Goyardine canvas is a proprietary material celebrated for its lightweight, durable design. Chevroches calfskin is sourced from Chevroches, a village in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region of France.

The hardware is made out of palladium, a scratch-resistant metal that’s part of the platinum family.

Inside, Cisalpin is lined with a linen-cotton blend.

Dimensions:

17” x 5.5” x 13”/ 43 cm x 14 cm x 33 cm

Handle Drop: 3.5”/ 9 cm

Weight:

2.2 lbs/ 1 kg

Price:

$4,100

Colors:

Black, Black & Tan, Green, Navy Blue, Grey

In terms of shape and size, the Cisalpin is the most typical backpack Goyard sells. Probably the best feature of this model is the structured double-slider zipper closure system that keeps the bag wide open while you’re packing.

Inside, there’s a floating pocket for storing small necessities like a cardholder or a small wallet. There’s also a D-ring hook so your keys don’t get lost in the bottom.

Compared to Goyard’s other backpacks, the Cisalpin has fairly wide straps, meaning your back and shoulders will stay comfortable, regardless of how much stuff you’re carrying.

Alpin MM Backpack

goyard alpin review
Goyard Alpin MM

Materials:

Like its big brother the Cisalpine, the Alpin MM is constructed primarily out of Goyardine canvas. This material, unique to Goyard, is made out of a combination of hemp, linen, and cotton. It is then coated with a water-resistant resin to prevent stains and increase durability.

Alpin’s top handle, flap, and bottom are made out of Clamecy cowhide, a celebrated leather originating from central France.

The hardware is palladium. Similar to the Cisalpin, the Alpin MM is lined with a linen-cotton textile.

Dimensions:

15.4” x 6.1” x 12.6”/ 39 cm x 15.5 cm x 32 cm

Handle Drop: 2.8”/ 7 cm

Weight:

4lbs/ 1.8 kg

Price:

$6,650/ €5,020

Colors:

Black, Black & Tan, Green, Navy Blue, and Grey.

Introduced in December 2015, the Alpin is a fairly new addition to Goyard’s collection. The name and the design were inspired by the steamer bags that Alpine hikers used to carry at the start of the 20th century.

While attractive, Alpin’s main job is functionality. For starters, this model has pockets galore. On the exterior of the bag (underneath the flap), there are slots for cards, a pen, and any other small knick-knacks you carry around.

Using the zipper, you can access the interior of the bag. Alternatively, you can get to your belongings by lifting up the flap and loosening the drawstring closure. It’s not the easiest design, but you know your items are secure.

Inside, there’s a 15-inch padded pocket that’s perfect for holding a laptop. There’s also a half-circle stud for your keys.

Alpin Mini Backpack

Goyard Mini Alpin Review

Materials:

Like the two previous models, the Alpin Mini is made out of Goyard’s Goyardine canvas. This material is lightweight and stain resistant, making it an excellent choice for your everyday bag.

The Mini’s flap, top handle, and base are made out of Chevroches calfskin. Its hardware is

palladium and its interior is lined with a cotton-linen textile.

Dimensions:

9.1” x 3.7” x 7.5”/ 23 cm x 9.5 cm x 19 cm

Handle Drop: 2.8”/ 7 cm

Weight:

0.66 lbs /0.3 kg

Price:

$3,560 to $3,670

Colors:

Available in all 11 of Goyard’s colorways: Black, Black & Tan, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Sky Blue, Navy Blue, White, and Grey.

If you love the look of the Alpin but want a smaller version, then look no further than the Alpin Mini. But don’t think this is just a shrunken-down model.

More than any other backpack on this list, the Alpin is versatile. The Mini holds its own as a backpack, a crossbody, and a handbag thanks to its two detachable and adjustable straps.

Plus, while it might be small, it holds more than enough for your day-to-day outings. You’ll have no trouble fitting an eReader or paperback book, a small water bottle, and daily essentials like a small wallet, keys, and a few hygiene items (hand sanitizer, cream, lipstick).

Saint Leger Backpack

goyard st leger backpack review
Goyard St Leger Review

Materials:

Like the other models on this list, Saint Leger is made primarily of Goyardine canvas. Its top handle and straps are crafted out of Chevroches calfskin.

Saint Leger’s hardware is palladium and its interior is lined with Goyard’s signature yellow cotton lining.

Dimensions:

14.6” x 5.9” x 13.3” / 37 cm x 15 cm x 34 cm

Handle Drop: 2.4”/ 6 cm

Weight:

1.7 lbs/ 790 g

Price:

$3,230

Colors:

Saint Leger is available in all 11 of Goyard’s colorways: Black, Black & Tan, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Sky Blue, Navy Blue, White, and Grey.

Saint Leger’s design was inspired by Goyard’s classic Steamer bag. In the past, people used these bags for storing dirty clothes during long cruises. By making Saint Leger lighter and more flexible, Goyard has invited a new generation to enjoy this stylish design.

But the best thing about the Saint Leger is that it’s fully foldable, thanks to its flexible design and the snap fasteners. That means it fits easily into your suitcase without taking up too much space or weight. When you need it, simply unroll it, add the straps, and wear it as a backpack.

Steamer PM Bag

goyard backpacks review
Goyard Steamer Review

Materials:

The Steamer PM is made out of a combination of Goyardine canvas and Clamecy cowhide. Its hardware is palladium and its lining is a cotton-linen mix.

Dimensions:

18.9” x 8.7” x 14.2”/ 48 cm x 22 cm x 36 cm

Weight:

3.5 lbs/ 1.6 kg

Price:

Unavailable

Colors:

Black, Black & Tan, Green, Navy Blue, Grey

The Steamer PM bag is a smaller version of the GM, a beloved style amongst 20th-century travelers. In the past, it was used for keeping dirty clothes separate from clean clothes and was stored on the back of cabin doors on cruise ships.

This style is incredibly versatile thanks to its half-circle studs and modular design. It can either be worn as a backpack, a crossbody, or a shoulder bag with the addition of a canvas strap.

Conclusion: Which Goyard Backpack Will You Buy?

Although all of the bags on this list are backpacks, each style has unique features that set it apart from the others. This makes comparing them a bit challenging, but we hope this guide has been helpful in your shopping journey.
