From simple biker shorts to bright suits, Lady Di had a way of making anything she wore an instant classic. That was especially true when it came to her favorite bags.
One of her top picks with a bamboo-handled Gucci tote that later bore her name. The tote was originally released in 1991 and got a modern makeover in 2021. But is the Diana still a classic? See our complete guide to help you decide.
Gucci Brand History
Guccio Gucci founded his eponymous brand in Florence, Italy in 1921. Before founding the house, Gucci worked as a porter at London’s Savoy Hotel and as a leather craftsman at the Franzi luggage company.
Following a leather shortage in 1935, Gucci was forced to use alternative materials. One such material was woven canapa, or hemp. This became a signature fabric for the brand, especially with the addition of Gucci’s interlocking diamond symbol printed on top.
Gucci Diana History
Gucci has been creating bags with bamboo handles since 1947. At the time, post-war Italy was going through an economic crisis. In response, the brand experimented with novel materials to reduce the cost of production.
This was a successful strategy from a financial standpoint, but it also proved to be a popular style, likely because it inspired thoughts about traveling, something that was mostly inaccessible at the time.
Released in 1991, the bamboo-handled Diana bag was named after the Princess of Wales. She was often spotted carrying it around London and more than likely influenced the bag’s popularity.
On July 1, 2021, Gucci released an updated version of the Diana bag on what would have been the princess’ 60th birthday.
The new design comes with detachable leather straps in fluorescent yellow, orange, and pink. This feature was inspired by the functional straps once used to maintain the shape of the bamboo handles.

Is the Gucci Diana Worth Buying?
From the unique bamboo handles to the durable leather body, there’s so much we love about this bag. On top of that, it has a practical design and is an It-Girl favorite.
We’re especially fond of the small and medium sizes as they manage to be roomy without adding too much bulk.
It is worth mentioning that the Diana is pretty expensive for what it is (essentially just a basic tote bag). That’s even more true when you consider that vintage models sell for under $1,000.
So, if you love the new style, then by all means go for it. But if you’re looking to score a deal, reselling sites like Fashionphile are full of less expensive options.
